Juniper again — the same tree Laura felled and milled herself — but this time the lathe was allowed to play.

The barrel is turned into a run of full, rounded beads, row after row, so the pen moves under the fingers like a strand held in the hand. The wood's rose and cream tones shift bead to bead. Gloss finish; gold hardware; considerable patience.

The tree stood through decades of wind to get here. The beads took an afternoon that behaved like one.
