Spalted tamarind: pale cream ground, veined with the fine black lines that fungi draw through timber when it rests long enough in the right conditions. No two maps alike. Laura turned it and sealed the drawing under gloss.

An instrument for ink, already marked in it. The forest wrote the first draft.
