Cottonwood grows where the water is; people have followed it to rivers for as long as we've been walking. It seemed like the right wood to keep time in.
A skeleton-gear clock sits deep in a single piece of cottonwood, pale and streaked with brown and grey, a knot standing watch in the upper corner. Finished in boiled linseed oil, it reads as both instrument and driftwood — something found, and something made.
The gears are visible. The hours pass anyway.
